Making a Splash for Charity

Take on the Challenge of a Swim Event!

David Howells, one of our regular Do It Yourself fundraisers, discovered Kids Under Cover serendipitously in 2011.

“I had just semi-retired and was sitting in a plane reading the paper, and thinking about some new challenges. In this weird ‘zen’ moment, the sun shone in through the window and landed on a full colour ad for the Cole Classic Ocean Swim  … and I thought  ‘I’ve never done an ocean swim. That’s it, I’m in’,” said David.

“When I registered for the swim I discovered I could choose a cause to support from a list provided to entrants. Through my previous business I had always supported organisations helping homeless people or victims of domestic violence, so Kids Under Cover was a natural fit. I became even more excited when researching the way they work; the sustainability of the accommodation solutions; and the scholarship support they provide,” he said.

David returned for his third Cole Classic Ocean Swim this year, completing the swim 3 minutes faster than the race average – “not bad for an old bloke”, as he put it.

Along the way he raised another $2,100 taking his total fundraising contribution to $7,000 from his three swims and a rally driving day he organised in 2014.

He said he had no qualms about asking for sponsorship support.

“Not at all. Kids Under Cover does such amazing work, it’s a privilege to make people aware of it and encourage their support.”
