Donate A Car!

Donate A Car is a fast and easy way to make a significant contribution to Kids Under Cover; you may even be eligible for a tax deduction. It's a simple process of signing over ownership of your vehicle to Kids Under Cover who collect your vehicle and retain the profits from its subsequent sale. The profits then go to helping us continue our vital work building homes for homeless and at-risk young people.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of vehicles are accepted?

Kids Under Cover accepts cars, trucks, motorcycles, and trailers with proper title information.

What if the vehicle is not running?

The vehicle does not have to be running, but you will be asked to provide details regarding the condition of the vehicle. Keep in mind that if the costs of towing and processing fees exceed the estimated auction value, we will be unable to accept the vehicle.

Does my car need to be registered?

Kids Under Cover only accepts unregistered vehicles. It's easy to deregister your car – just call VicRoads on 13 11 71.

How long will it take for my car to be picked up?

Once Kids Under Cover has received your donation forms, a representative will contact you to organise the collection of your vehicle within seven working days (or sooner by negotiation) if located within the Melbourne metropolitan area. Donors outside this range may experience further delays, and it's possible the towing fees will outweigh the auction value and in this case we will be unable to accept the donation.

What are the tax benefits of donating my vehicle?

If your car is valued by the Australian Valuation Office (AVO – a branch of the ATO) at more than $5,000 then it is possible to claim a tax deduction on your income tax return. Click here for more information from the ATO.

How much of my donation goes to building houses and bungalows for homeless and at-risk young people?

Kids Under Cover receives 100% of the net proceeds generated by car sales.

How do I know my vehicle is in good hands once it's been picked up?

Kids Under Cover uses a fully licensed and insured towing service.

Benefits

Direct benefit to those most in need

100% of net proceeds from the sale of your car donation will be used to run our housing program for homeless and at-risk young people.

Claim the donation on your tax return

If your vehicle is valued at over $5,000 the ATO (under sections 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act, 1997) allows a full tax deduction – a wonderful reward for helping young people in need.

Eliminates the hassle and cost of selling privately

Donate A Car is as simple as making a phone call and signing over ownership to Kids Under Cover.  There is no need to haggle over low trade-in with a car dealer, advertise for a private sale, or obtain a roadworthy certificate.

Making a difference

A car donation to Kids Under Cover is a significant contribution which helps us change the lives of young people in need.

How It Works

Kids Under Cover's car donation process is quick and easy:

1.      Contact Kids Under Cover on 1800 801 633 or simply fill in the following forms:

Request for Valuation – this form authorises the AVO to value the car. It is this valuation that is
used to determine whether you are eligible for a tax deduction. More details are outlined
         below.

Certificate of Donation – this form formally transfers ownership to Kids Under Cover and is
         required by the ATO.

Car Details Form – provides Kids Under Cover and the car dealership or auction house with
detailed information to estimate the value of the car prior to its collection and subsequent sale.

2.      Send the completed forms to:

Kids Under Cover, PO Box 3038, Richmond Vic 3121

Or

Fax to: 03 9429 6299

3.      Once these forms are received by Kids Under Cover, we will arrange the collection of the vehicle using a licensed towing service at no extra cost. The car is then sold via a car dealership or auction house.

4.      If the vehicle is valued at more than $5,000 the ATO will send you a tax deductible receipt.
