Kids Under Cover announces the launch of new Mentoring Program
It is our great pleasure to announce the launch of the Kids Under Cover Building Foundations Mentoring Program, which is due to commence in early 2012.
Building Foundations aims to provide the young people we support with regular one-on-one contact with a trained adult volunteer mentor, who will offer guidance and encouragement. Many young people lack a positive role model and the consequences can be social isolation, low self-esteem, depression and even crime. Mentoring is proven to increase a young person’s confidence and self-esteem and as a result they are in a better position to make life-changing decisions.
Mentoring isn’t something that gives immediate results and therefore both the mentor and young person commit to regular meetings over a sustained period. It is a rewarding experience that enriches the life of both the young person and the mentor and is therefore worth the time commitment.
For now, the Building Foundations Mentoring Program is for young people residing in our Studios and Houses across Victoria, but we hope to roll it out to Queensland and the ACT in the near future.
Three-year funding from our friends and Undercover Angels for 2011, the Portland House Foundation, has made this new initiative possible. We would also like to thank the Matana Foundation for Young People for their support in year one of this program.
